Shippam's Evening Talk Series

Step into the storys behind one of Chichester's most iconic brands.

Join us for a special series of evening talks inspired by Hurrah for Shippam's - celebrating the history, people, and products behind the famous local name.

Each talk takes place from 6.00pm - 7.00pm (doors open at 5.15pm) giving you access to view the Hurrah for Shippam's exhibition before the event.
Tickets: £8 per person. Booking is essential, with early booking advised.

In Conversation with Shippam's Employees

What was it really like to work at Shippam's?
Join Daniel Musty (Community Producer) and Lauren Roberts (Production Lead) from Millstream, a local film company, as they share the journey of creating the Shippam's exhibition film and preserving oral histories.

Hear from former Shippam's employees about life at the factory, their memories of the 'Shippam's family', and their role in shaping the exhibition. There will be an opportunity to ask your own questions about working for the company.

Curing More Than Meat: Shippam's and Food Science

Discover Shippam's surprising role in public health.
Discover a lesser-known side of one of Chichester's most iconic companies. In this fascinating talk, historian Dr Laura Newman explores Shippam's contribution to the world of food science. Drawing on rich archival sources - from inspection notebooks to journal articles - the talk examines how the company responded to food safety threats such as botulism, and how its work helped shape wider understandings of preservation and public health.

Dr Laura Newman is a historian of science, medicine, museums, and education, with a particular interest in the history of the workplace. Her research explores how everyday environments have shaped ideas about health and hygiene. She is the author of Germs in the English Workplace, c.1880-1945 (Routledge, 2023)

You'll see a selection of adverts featured in Hurrah for Shippam's, alongside never-before-seen gems from the archive.

With stories behind the slogans and insights into changing tastes and trends, this relaxed talk is perfect for anyone curious about advertising, design, or the golden age of British branding.
