Volunteering

Volunteers are essential to the work we do and we have a wonderful team of volunteers helping us with a range of projects and tasks, from cleaning the archaeology store to helping visitors.

The museum could not run without the vital help and support of our volunteers so if you are interested in volunteering with us, please complete the application form below and return it to noviumlearning@chichester.gov.uk

ChichestHER Research Volunteer

Purpose

To assist with the research for the ChichestHER project which will later inform the basis of future exhibition interpretation.  

Main Activities

  • To assist the Exhibitions Officer with the research of notable women from Chichester District.
  • To use archives to further research and knowledge on selected women.
  • To identify objects that help to tell these women's stories.

Qualities & Interests

This role will suit you if you have good research skills, you are methodical in your approach and have a high attention to detail.

What We Offer

  • Introduction to the ChichestHER project and regular catch-ups to hear about research
  • Access to the museum's collection
  • Basic training in the use of the museum's database system, MODES (Role dependent)
  • Social events for volunteers to meet up

Where

Remote but will require accessing archives and libraries

ChichestHER Digitisation Volunteer

Purpose

To assist the Exhibitions Officer with the digitisation of The Novium Museum's collections, specifically objects and ephemera relating to women for the ChichestHER project.

Main Activities

To assist the Exhibitions Officer with the digitisation of the museum's collection.

To assist with updating object records with relevant information.

Qualities & Interests

This role will suit you if you have good IT skills, you are methodical in your approach and have a high attention to detail.

What We Offer

  • Training in object handling and packing
  • Basic training in the use of the museum's database system, MODES
  • Basic training in object assessment (Role dependent).
  • Basic training on the museum's documentation and information management procedures.

Volunteer Museum Guide

Purpose

To welcome visitors to The Novium Museum and respond to any of their needs. This includes leading tours for groups and members of the public.

Main Activities

  • Greeting visitors to The Novium Museum and Tourist Information Centre.
  • Provide short 20 minute highlight tours of the museum.
  • Help maintain and organise the interpretative resources for the Museum
  • Provide information about exhibitions and artefacts.
  • Help keep the museum clean, tidy and organised

Additional Activities

  • Researching and developing new highlight tours
  • Providing highlights tours at evening events

Qualities and Interests:

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Enjoys talking to groups of people and leading tours
  • Are able to respond to differing visitor requirements
  • Are willing and able to work on your own initiative
  • Are consistently polite and approachable
  • Have an interest in local history

Volunteer Gallery Steward

Purpose

To welcome visitors to The Novium Museum and respond to any of their needs.

Main Activities

  • Greeting visitors to The Novium Museum and providing information about the current exhibitions.
  • Help maintain and organise the interpretative resources in the museum and replenish as needed.
  • Keeping the museum galleries tidy and organised.
  • Answering questions from visitors and being available to help if needed.
  • Patrolling the galleries to ensure that visitor's respect the museum guidelines (no food/drink in the galleries or handling of the exhibits).

Additional Activities

  • Assisting staff with tasks associated with the galleries as and when require

  • We are looking for a volunteer who
